Old Scotch were comprehensively dismantled by a bigger, more skilled and more experienced Old Xaverians team on the weekend.
Playing at home on a pleasant day for football, the only drawback was a muddy centre and a slight 1-2 goal breeze to the clubrooms end. Back into the team were Hugo Perry, Scott Sherwen and Paul Ellis, with the in-form trio of Tom Campbell, Lachie Hill and Mark Passador the unfortunate withdrawals through injury.
Old Xaverians kicked to the changerooms end in the first quarter, and in no time they had 3 goals on the board. Rob Ferraro was scintillating through the middle, but with a lack of dominant presenting forwards, Old Scotch were playing right into the backmens' hands. Ash Walsh crept through the defences to bring up the first for Old Scotch, but at quarter-time Scotch had a 16 point deficit. To make things worse, at the end of the quarter George Dick was reported and sent off for 15 minutes without replacement, after a late spoiling attempt was deemed illegal contact.
The second quarter began where the first left off, with Old Xavier continuing to win more contested ball than the Scotchies and making the most of the Cardinals' pressured turnovers. To add to Old Scotch's woes, Richard Eva courageously backed into a pack, only to be rewarded with a knee to his hip that put him out of action for the rest of the day and potentially another week. Sam Thompson battled bravely under much duress as the Old Xaverians hit the post several times to diminish the impact on the scoreboard. Will Davis managed to break the momentum briefly with an impressive goal on the run, but at half-time the margin had blown out to an unflattering 48 points.
The third quarter started positively for Old Scotch, as a couple of early goals caught the Old Xaverians unawares, but as the quarter wore on the floodgates opened and a sea of red and black bombarded their forward line. While Old Scotch managed to add 3 goals to their tally, Old Xavs added 8 and extended their half-time lead to 72 points at the final change. With the game a foregone conclusion, the final quarter was about restoring some pride and avoiding a complete blowout, and to that extent Old Scotch responded: 3 goals to 1 in the last. Ash Walsh brought up the CANNON TOYOTA GOAL OF THE DAY with a balk and snap from 40 and Paul Ellis was the beneficiary of an awkward bounce on the goal-line, but the damage was done. The final score read Old Xavs 18.17.125 to Old Scotch 9.7.61.
Old Scotch now sits in 8th position; Old Brighton the opponent next week sits in 9th position. To avoid relegation, this game is vitally important with 9 games remaining. Get down to South Road next week and support the boys as they aim to string some big wins together.
