Coming off 4 consecutive losses, Old Scotch were in desperate need of a home win to get their season rattling off in the right direction.
Several big names were back for Old Scotch, most notably Franchise Corner's Adam Houlihan, his volatile body energised and willing for the big clash. Lachie Cohen was in for his first game and Jack Furey was a late withdrawal to Box Hill, allowing Paul Ellis to return after injuring himself in round 1.
The Paul Dodd-led Marcellin were coming off a difficult start to the season and it was no surprise that a willing contest was provided in the first quarter.
Ellis made the highlight reel early with a clever opportunistic snap, however, an inspired Marcellin took early honours, dominating most of the play in the first half of the quarter. Not to be outdone, Al Pike showed off his deadly left boot with a laconic 40 metre bomb as Scotch weathered the initial barrage. As the the quarter wore on, Scotch began to get on top, with Passador a focal point up forward. At quarter-time, Scotch had slammed home 6.1 and held a 15 point lead with Hill, Ferraro and Dick all continuing their good work from previous games.
The dam burst open in the second quarter, as the pressure from the Cardinals become all too much for an inexperienced Marcellin team lacking confidence. Whereas in the first quarter Scotch could barely miss putting it between the big sticks, the huge amount of ball being won by the red men was providing many opportunities for wastefulness. Scotch banged on 5.8 to Marcellin's solitary goal, a comprehensive destruction in all facets of the game. Nick Allen's 40 metre shank off the side of the boot under pressure was a contender for the CANNON TOYOTA goal of the day, but with many goals still to come, it was only a matter of time before he was bettered. At half-time, Scotch held an extremely comfortable 54 point lead.
The second half continued in the same fashion, Old Scotch winning a copious amount of possession and once again squandering many chances to make the scoreboard even more one-sided. Nick Allen slotted through a wobbler from the pocket and Lachie Hill hit one right out of the middle from 45 at full pace. Mark Passador continued his topsy turvy day, his hands like glue but his goalkicking all over the place as he went about his business to finish with 7.7 for the day. Tom Campbell in the ruck and Richard Eva across half-back sustained their terrific form from previous weeks and at 3 quarter time the lead was 76 points.
Not content to settle for anything less than a 100 point win, Old Scotch continued to attack in the last, youngsters Will Davis and Lachie Cohen especially impressive as the ball continued to flood out of the middle. The goal avalanche continued, with Nick Allen adding 4 to his yearly tally and before long the margin ticked over 100 points. All that remained was a CANNON TOYOTA GOAL OF THE DAY, and at the 24 minute mark, Lachie Hill provided just that. Intercepting an errant handpass in the forward pocket, he collected the ball, ducked and spun away from a Marcellin defender before sneaking through an off-balance check-side punt. The siren finally sounded to put Marcellin out of their misery, the final margin a substantial 111 points, Old Scotch having kicked an inaccurate 23.23.
Old Scotch now sit 7th at 2-4, but with a healthy 106.59% and only one game out of the final four, the finals dream is still alive. Get down to Harry Trott Oval next week, as Old Scotch go hunting for the undefeated scalp of Collegians.
