Old Trinity runs over Old Scotch
02, Sunday, May, 2010
With scores level at 3 Quarter Time it was Old Trinity with the wind in the last quarter who stood tall to win by 14 points.
K2 Stadium played host to round 4 Premier grade action when Old Scotch met Old Trinity on the weekend.
Camberwell was drenched in sunshine, however the Melbourne autumn winds were up and about, with a 4 goal breeze buffeting towards the bowling green end. At 1-2 after two frustratingly close losses, Old Scotch was in need of a victory to keep its season humming along. Will Lewis won the toss and as expected sided with the breeze for the first term. A good start was a necessity after last week's lacklustre beginning, and only moments into the game, Old Scotch was on the board through a Tom Campbell free kick and monster goal. A Passador free kick brought up Scotch's second in as many minutes, and the dream start had eventuated. Lach Armstrong and Rich Eva were in everything early, along with Rob Ferraro across half-back. The goals continued to flow and Scotch seemed to have all the answers to any Trinity forward thrusts. At quarter-time, Scotch held a 31 point lead.
What followed quarter-time was as abysmal a display as you are likely to see from an Old Scotch team. Kicking into the wind, it was always going to require a more sustained challenge than the first quarter, but the Scotchies seemed to lose all accountability, leadership, structure and willingness to contest. Trinity on the other hand regrouped and surged, banging on 8 goals to zero to take a 20 point lead in to half-time. The uninspired display by the Cardinals was most disappointing, considering the importance of this match for shaping the season. After half-time and kicking with the breeze, Old Scotch needed to attack and get in front to give themselves a realistic chance to win the match. Winning stoppages was not the problem as per last week, rather lazy decision-making and poor foot skills.
After half a quarter of congested end-to-end football, Nick Allen brought the game to life, looking potent in his new role across half-forward. His second goal earned him the CANNON TOYOTA GOAL OF THE DAY, after he worked himself under his opponent, ran onto the loose ball and slotted it on the run from 30 tucked into the scoreboard side boundary. Scotch could not string 3-4 goals together though, as Trinity worked hard into the wind and at three-quarter time the scores were level. As to be expected, Old Trinity went into the last quarter as slight favourites given the wind advantage, however they had clearly demonstrated in the previous quarter that goals could be kicked to the top end if you worked the ball through run and carry.
As the quarter see-sawed early on, Trinity took first honours to take the lead. Nick Allen responded up forward again, with a strong forward grab and beautiful kick into the breeze to bring up his third. While never truly breaking away, Old Trinity seemed to have Scotch in a comfortable position, helped immeasurably by poor decisions under pressure that proved extremely costly. As the siren sounded with Old Trinity 14 points ahead, Old Scotch supporters could not help but feel cheated, that a lapse in intensity and concentration had denied them what would've been a crucial victory.
Nevertheless, it all starts again next Saturday, with the opportunity to rectify the season against Old Melburnians at Junction Oval. We as a team owe the supporters more than we are offering up so far.
